Synopsis

The Government of Alberta has introduced new funding under the Agricultural Societies Act Alberta, offering $7 million to support and revitalize the work of registered agricultural societies.

With nearly 300 active societies across the province, this funding aims to strengthen their role in rural communities and ensure their continued relevance and sustainability.

Understanding the Agricultural Societies Act Alberta

Alberta has committed $7 million in funding through the Agricultural Societies Program to support the work of agricultural societies—community-based organizations historically focused on rural development and the promotion of agriculture.

While these societies are governed under the Agricultural Societies Act, the funding itself is created and administered by the Alberta government, not by the Act.

A Note on Numbers and Growth

Currently, there are 292 registered agricultural societies across the province. Despite this large number, only one new society has been incorporated in recent decades.

The reasons for this could vary: limited geographic demand, regulatory complexity, or the fact that existing societies already cover much of the province. It’s not necessarily a matter of awareness or interest. In fact, with over $11 million granted in 2024–2025, the Agricultural Societies Program appears to offer consistent and ongoing support for these organizations.

Why This Funding Still Matters

Agricultural societies remain foundational to many of Alberta’s rural communities. They often operate and maintain critical local infrastructure like community halls and fairgrounds and organize events that foster agricultural education and rural connection.

This new wave of funding represents an opportunity for societies to:

  • Improve or modernize local facilities

  • Expand programming tied to agricultural promotion

  • Strengthen rural economies through events and engagement

  • Attract new, younger volunteers and participants to ensure long-term viability

For many communities, this support is not just about money—it’s about visibility, capacity-building, and staying relevant.

Accessing the Funding: What Societies Need to Know

To apply for support through the Agricultural Societies Program, eligible societies must:

  • Be registered under the Agricultural Societies Act

  • Submit a clear proposal outlining how the funds will benefit their community

  • Demonstrate sound financial management and readiness to execute their project

  • Consider collaborating with local partners to strengthen their applications and broaden impact

Given the longstanding presence of agricultural societies in Alberta, this funding provides a chance to both honor their legacy and secure their future.
